IRIDOLOGY?

From the moment we’re born, we learn to pick up subconscious clues about other people by looking at their eyes. We can glean a lot of information about a person’s happiness, demeanour and general wellbeing without any special training at all.

  • We describe someone who is depressed as having “lost the sparkle” in their eyes
  • We might instinctively mistrust someone with “beady” or “shifty” eyes
  • A person who is hung over may have red, bloodshot eyes
  • People with liver problems often have yellow eyes
  • When we don’t drink enough water, we get bags under our eyes

But did you know there’s a scientific study which recognises hundreds of eye signs that provide valuable insights into your inherited health? This evidence-based system can tell you all kinds of interesting things about your genetic make-up, your constitution and even your personality traits.

Welcome to the fascinating world of Iridology

What Is Iridology?

“Such are the eyes; such is the body” Hippocrates

Iridology is the study of the coloured portion of the eye that surrounds the pupil; the iris.

Data gathered from thousands of eyes provides us with evidence that genetic “markers” from the past three generations can clearly be seen in a person’s iris. Just as you inherit certain traits from your parents (such as hair colour and facial features,) you also inherit their physical strengths and weaknesses. Iridologists believe this genetic information is recorded in the iris.

The Story of Iridology

As a young boy, Ignatz Von Peczely was trying to free an owl that had become trapped in his garden. In doing so, the bird’s leg was accidentally broken. The boy was so upset, he decided to try and nurse the bird back to health. Over time he noticed that a dark mark had appeared in the owl’s eye. He thought it was so unusual, that he made a point of observing it each time he visited the bird. Over time, the mark gradually grew paler. It was almost as if the trauma had healed.

These events sparked an obsession in Ignatz Von Preczely, and he began to keep records of the various “signs” he noticed in the eyes of the people he met. He soon gained a reputation for having an astounding ability to read a person’s health from their eyes. People soon flocked from far and wide to consult with him.

Von Peczely eventually trained as a medical doctor and began studying the iris in earnest. Not only did he keep records of the eyes of his living patients, he also researched markings in the eyes of bodies in the hospital morgue. This provided a unique opportunity to correlate his findings with the diseases the people had died from. The scientific study of Iridology was born.

From a herbalist’s point of view, an Iridology session can provide valuable information about a person’s hereditary strengths and weaknesses. This information allows the practitioner to select appropriate herbs to strengthen the constitution, as well as address any current health issues. This ensures you are treated to a truly holistic herbal prescription, aimed at supporting your body’s natural healing power, instead of robotically addressing  health complaints based on symptoms alone. This combination of Iridology plus herbs makes for a powerful and intelligent system of medicine.

Mini case study: Acne

There are hundreds of plants which are helpful in the treatment of acne, but none will work effectively if the cause of the acne isn’t fully understood. Iridology can help get to the root of what’s happening by taking a deeper look at the constitution (your inherited strengths and weaknesses.)

For example a “lymphatic person” may not be able to eliminate waste as quickly and efficiently as the others types. As the organs of elimination become overwhelmed, the skin begins to bear the brunt of the burden. These people would benefit from lymphatic herbs such as cleavers, blue flag and burdock, and herbs that support the liver such as dandelion and barberry.

On the other hand a “poly-glandular person” may suffer more with hormonal issues. For them, bringing the endocrine system back into balance is the best way to resolve the underlying cause of their problem. They would benefit more from plants such as chaste tree or saw palmetto.

Understanding your constitutional make up allows you to take a more individually focused approach to quickly and effectively solving your health issues. It also arms you with strategies to avoid the recurrence of the problem in the future. Herbal prescriptions and lifestyle advice can then be fine-tuned to suit your unique situation, and change alongside you as your symptoms improve.

Iridology is a hugely powerful tool when it comes to the prevention of disease. Being aware of your constitutional tendencies and inherited make-up allows you to adjust your lifestyle in a way that can help prevent disease from happening in the first place.

What Are The Benefits Of An Iridology Session?

There are many reasons why people come for an in-depth iridology consultation.

  • It’s a genuinely interesting experience to learn more about your constitution and inherited health. An iridology session may be particularly useful for people who have no prior knowledge of their family health history; for example – adopted children.
  • An iridology consultation can identify which organs may be involved in the development of your existing health issues. This information provides clues as to why and how your current health problems initially began.
  • Although Iridology isn’t a diagnostic tool in the conventional medical sense, it can offer suggestions for specific preventative measures to stop health issues developing in the first place. In this respect, Iridology is an inexpensive way to help determine your risk factors for any particular disease.
  • Iridology can help to promote the health of future generations of your family by showing you how to break the cycle of inherited disease.
  • Most people have never had the opportunity to see their own eyes up close. A photograph of your iris along with a short preventative health report is supplied at every session for your future reference.
What Can I Expect From An Iridology Session?

The purpose of an iridology session is to provide you with clues about how your current health issues may have started and offer strategies for resolving them. This information also allows the practitioner to provide appropriate advice about the possible root cause of your problems, and if required, prescribe any relevant herbs or supplements to help resolve current health issues and avoid future problems.

CASE STUDY

Mrs. X comes to the clinic complaining of catarrh and sinus pain. For the past week she’s used nasal sprays to help relieve her symptoms, but the problem hasn’t been fully resolved. Upon inspection of the iris, it’s clear she has poor elimination, and there are markings in the kidney zone which show a tendency towards weakness in this organ. During the consultation it becomes clear that she doesn’t drink enough water or visit the toilet much during the day. Armed with this information we discover that her body is not eliminating waste as well as it could be. This is causing the tissues to become congested and inflamed. She now presents with a picture of system overload. Herbs are prescribed to help support her lymphatic system and kidneys, and she is encouraged to increase her fluid intake.

By viewing the problem through a holistic lens, we see that the root cause of the problem is poor elimination leading to inflammation. Although the nasal sprays may have helped in the short term, they were never going to get to the real root of the problem. Mrs. X leaves the clinic empowered to learn how to prevent, rather than continue to symptomatically treat her health issue.

How to book an Iridology session

An Iridology assessment lasts approximately 45 minutes. During this time I’ll take I’ll use an iriscope to take a detailed photograph of your eyes. The most up to date iridology maps and charts are then used to assess colour, fibre formation and any other signs and markings that make up your unique health picture. Taking a photo is a super quick, simple procedure, and is completely non-invasive.* After the session, you’ll receive a copy of your photos. You’ll also receive tailored lifestyle advice about how best to support your individual constitution.

The cost for an in depth iris analysis complete with photographs is £65. This does not include any herbal prescriptions which may be recommended as an optional extra. All charges will be made clear at the time of booking. To arrange an iridology assessment please email sarah@alchemilla.co
