The medicinal mushrooms in this tried and tested formula have been especially selected for their bitter flavour profile. This means that in addition to their many other health benefits, they’re ideal for helping to support digestive function.
Herbal bitters have long been used as tonics, aperitifs, digestive and metabolic aids. The molecules which give the mushrooms in this extract their bitter taste, interact with cellular receptors in the gastro-intestinal tract to help stimulate the production of digestive enzymes which help improve nutrient absorption, and aid the removal of metabolic waste.
Dark & stormy mushroom bitters contains a blend of the following extracts:
Lions’ mane (Hericium erinaceus) is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a digestive aid and for reducing symptoms associated with gastric ulcers. The extract in our formula is made with mushrooms grown by a local specialist at Mill Farm mushrooms here in Cornwall. The extract is tinctured here at the apothecary by the double extraction method which uses only hot water and organic rye alcohol. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is of scientific interest for its many and varied medicinal properties. It has been studied for it’s ability to help lower blood sugar, and so may be helpful for people who have difficulty maintaining their weight due to type 2 diabetes. Like lion’s mane it has been used in the treatment of peptic ulcers, and has relaxant properties which help smooth the passage of food through the digestive tract. Reishi beers are popular in China and Japan and are commonly drunk to help digest a heavy meal.
Turkey tail (Coriolus versicolor) is often added to soups and stews to help increase poor appetite after an illness.
Dark and stormy mushroom bitters also contains extracts of damiana, cardamom, ginger, liquorice, fennel and bitter orange. These carminative herbs are renowned for their digestive properties, helping to reduce bloating and spasm in the digestive tract and adding a pleasant taste which complements the flavour of the bitter mushrooms
